US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Russia should get ready for missiles to be fired at its ally Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack near Damascus on Saturday. His tweets came in response to a warning from Russian ambassador to Beirut, that Russian forces would shoot down any missiles fired at Syria.
According to a monitor group, Syrian forces evacuated key defense buildings in Damascus in view of US threat. President Bashar al-Assad's
government has denied mounting a chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Douma.
Efforts at the UN Security Council to find a diplomatic solution failed yesterday, with Washington and Moscow opposing each other's rival motions to set up an international investigation into chemical weapons use. Opponents of unilateral US action called an emergency closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council for tomorrow.
