US President Donald Trump has asked Americans to rise above hatred and bigotry to silence violent protests like those seen in Charlottesville, Virginia yesterday. Violence erupted between white nationalists and counter-demonstrators over the fate of a monument that honors a hero of the Civil War that ended slavery.
Mr Trump told reporters at his New Jersey golf course that
United States condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.
Later, the White House clarified that President Trump has condemned all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred when he spoke about the violence in Charlottesville, including "white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups".
