US President Donald Trump gave netizens yet another reason to shed tears of laughter this week as he ‘followed the (Islamic) sunnah’ of having his tea with his right hand.
A video of Trump quickly adhering to Saudi King Salman’s advice on using his right hand instead of left, for drinking tea, went viral on Twitter as user @Khalidinho__ posted it, with the video tweet garnering 17K likes and 24K retweets within just a day.
Trump made headlines several times with his controversial comments on Islam and Muslims, with his most controversial move as President as of yet being the ban on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority nations that he is still trying to fully implement in the United States. A Hawaii court permanently stalled his executive order while the US Supreme Court also stayed it temporarily.
Trump, however, visited Saudi Arabia first on his first international tour as President, raising many
eyebrows, since Saudi Arabia is known to be the most Islamic of all countries. Saudi Arabia, however, does not feature on the list of seven countries to which Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’, as some call it, applies. In fact, Saudi Arabia has severed or complicated relations with most countries on the list, such as Yemen, Iran and Syria.
The video going viral on Twitter is captioned: “King Salman telling Trump to drink with his right hand! man went from Muslim ban to following the sunnah real quick money talkssssss”.
It is a ‘sunah’ practice in Islam to eat and drink with the right hand, with Sunnah being the teachings or the ways of living of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. In the video, Trump is seen having tea with his left hand, but changing hands quickly as King Salman points out the ‘tradition’ to him. Later in the video, Trump can also be heard saying, or repeating after somebody else, “Always the right hand!”
