The Cabinet has approved the issuance of the Law on Equal Wages and Salaries for Men and Women. The State News Agency WAM reported that the new law will provide women with equal opportunities as partners in the UAE’s development. It will further empower women to lead future national strategies and ambitious projects.

UAE Cabinet’s approval of the Law on Equal Wages and Salaries comes in line with the government’s objective to ensure the protection of women's rights and support their role in the national development process.

The law on the gender equality has been welcomed by women at the highest levels of the UAE Government. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, President of the

Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, said the move was part of the UAE’s approach in empowering women.

In 2015, the UAE Council for Gender Balance was established and in September, the UAE launched the world's first Gender Balance Guide.

Women have a substantial presence in the Emirati workforce in the federal government. According to an estimate , the presence of women in the federal work force is more than 50 per cent. Although studies have shown that UAE ranks high in the Middle East for 'wage equality for similar work', but it fares far less in global gender rankings.
