UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the implementation of the Paris climate accord, saying that climate change poses a far-reaching threat. Guterres made the appeal yesterday, ahead of the opening of a meeting at UN headquarters in New York on poverty, income disparity and climate change.
Guterres said population growth, climate change, food insecurity, water scarcity and chaotic urbanization in certain parts of the world are interacting with each other. He added that the world must recognize that climate change
is the main accelerator of all other factors. He also said those who do not bet on a green economy or green technologies will inevitably lose economic leadership in the years to come. His remark was apparently directed at the Trump administration, which has pulled the US out of the Paris agreement.
During the 3-day meeting, ministers from more than 40 nations are to outline their efforts toward Sustainable Development Goals that should be achieved by 2030.
