UNGA 78th Meeting: Around 80 countries expresses concerns over violation of women's rights in Afghanistan

Amid various curbs imposed on women in Afghanistan by the Taliban regime, around 80 countries issued a joint statement at the UNGA 78th meeting expressing their concerns over the violation of women and girls' rights in the country.

They urged Kabul to lift the curbs and ensure equal rights for women. The countries also condemned the diktats issued by the Taliban regime while urging them to reverse the orders. Countries including, UAE, Australia, Japan, Spain, Chile, along with 75 other member states and observers have asked the Taliban to respect



women's and girls' rights based on the Taliban values and international human rights. They further urged the Taliban to ensure full, equal and meaningful participation of women and girls in public and political life of Afghanistan. 

Since coming to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Taliban authorities have closed most girls' high schools, barred women from university, stopped many female Afghan aid staff from working and even barred them from visiting restaurants with gardens.
