The UN Security Council last night passed a resolution demanding Israel to stop building settlements on occupied Palestinian territory. The resolution was put forward at the 15-member council for a vote by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal. Israel and US President-elect Donald Trump had called on the United States to veto the measure. It is the first resolution the Security Council has adopted on Israel and the Palestinians in nearly eight years.
Israel lashed out at US President Barack Obama
over the UNSC resolution. A statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said, Israel rejects this shameful anti-Israel resolution at the UN and will not abide by its terms. It said the Obama administration not only failed to protect Israel against this gang-up at the UN, it colluded with it behind the scenes.
Israeli Prime Minister has also instructed Israel's ambassadors in New Zealand and Senegal to return to Israel for consultations in response to the UN resolution on settlements.
