Voting begins in Russia for a three-day presidential election today, March 15. The polling began from the country’s easternmost regions, Chukotka and Kamchatka this morning. Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov became the first regional head to cast his vote. Voting is set to close at 11:30 PM Indian Time on Sunday in Kaliningrad — a Russian exclave bordering Poland and Lithuania.
People across Russia are voting to elect their President for the next six years. This will be the first time Russia will use an option to vote online. The option will be available in 27 Russian regions and Crimea, Donbass and Novorossia which Moscow annexed from Ukraine. For the first time, the
people of Donbas and Novorossia are voting for the Russian presidential elections. Polls are already open in Russian-occupied Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
The candidates who are contesting for the top state post in the 2024 election are Russia’s incumbent President Vladimir Putin, New People’s Party’s Vladislav Davankov, LDPR party’s Leonid Slutsky and Communist Party of Russia’s Nikolay Kharitonov. Experts say the election is set to prolong President Putin’s rule by six more years. The Russian President has appealed to the people of his country to exercise their right to vote.
