The massive growth of e-commerce in India is fueling a boom in the country’s warehousing sector.

The demand for warehousing executives in India has grown by 18% between January and August 2018 from a year ago, while the number of candidates joining the sector rose 17% during the period, jobs listings site QuikrJobs found in a recent study. Its research was based on entry-level hiring across 10 million resumes and over 500 role types from QuikrJobs.

“Be it the world’s largest retailer acquiring (an) Indian e-commerce giant, the world’s largest furniture retailer setting foot in India, or the increase in manufacturing activities, these instances show how warehousing has become a fundamental part of the business infrastructure for any retail company in the country,” QuikrJobs said in a statement. “As we see the demands of online product

delivery double up, there is a significant amount of focus on the storage facility needs in the country.”

The demand for warehousing executives is rising in India at a time when such jobs are on the decline in other parts of the world due to automation. In India, there are still only three robots per 10,000 workers.
Where and who
Among Indian metros, the emerging tech hub of Hyderabad has seen the biggest spike in warehousing jobs this year so far. However, non-metros recorded higher average growth rates of 28% compared to the average of around 9% in the five metros Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
These jobs are majorly skewed towards men. Hardly one in 10 of employees are women.

This is largely in line with the logistics industry the world over due to barriers like heavy weight-lifting requirements.
