Germany: A woman in Germany was arrested on Tuesday after she allegedly turned off her hospital roommate’s ventilator - twice - because she was annoyed by the sound it made. Police said the 72-year-old suspect switched off the life support in a Mannheim health facility despite being told the machine was vital for the patient.
She is suspected of having turned off the ventilator on her fellow patient, 79, just before 8 pm that evening citing “feeling disturbed by the noise coming from the oxygen device”, according to a joint press release from Mannheim public prosecutor’s office and Mannheim police.
"Although the suspect
was informed by the hospital staff that the oxygen supply was a vital measure, she is said to have switched off the device again around 9:00 pm,” the release stated.
The 79-year-old patient had to be resuscitated, authorities said, and even though the woman’s life was out of danger, she still required intensive care.
The Mannheim public prosecutor's office later obtained an arrest warrant against the accused at the district court, where she was subsequently produced on Wednesday.
The presiding judge signed off on the arrest warrant and sent the 72-year-old to jail on charges of attempted manslaughter.
