World leaders condemn Russia terror attack

World leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have condemned the attack in the subway of Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg yesterday. 11 people were killed and 45 injured in an explosion that went off in a tunnel between two metro stations.

In a tweet, Mr Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the blast. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was in the city when the blast occurred, visited the scene and laid flowers at a makeshift shrine.

US President Donald Trump



described the attack as a terrible thing, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, it was a barbaric act. European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said, Europe's thoughts were with the Russian people. In a unanimous statement, the 15-member United Nations Security Council called for the perpetrators of the attack to face justice.

Russia's Investigative Committee has called the explosion a terror attack. No group has, so far, claimed responsibility for the explosion. Authorities in Saint Petersburg have declared three days of mourning for the victims.
