A BJP MLA from Gorakhpur, the home seat of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, was caught on camera shouting at a woman IPS officer Charu Nigam , reducing her to tears.
Circle Officer Charu Nigam has been active in the anti-Romeo squad formed by CM Adityanath.
A footage shows Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, a well-known physician in Gorakhpur, speaking excitedly to the police at a public demonstration in Kareemnagar. As Circle Officer Charu Nigam tries to intervene, Agarwal explodes into a fit of rage, asking her to not "cross limits" and stay off. During the heated argument, Nigam says, "I am the officer in charge here. I know what I am doing." A little later, as a senior official arrives on the scene, she is seen wiping her tears with a handkerchief.
According to reports, a group of people
had gathered on the spot to protest against an alleged nexus between illicit alcohol vendors and the police in the area. While Agarwal had asked them to remain there until he arrived, the police, led by Nigam, tried to evict them.
Speaking to reporters later, Agarwal refused to apologise to Nigam, accusing her of using force an 80-year-old man, pregnant women and others who were gathered for a "peaceful protest". He can be seen wagging a finger at Nigam menacingly, while shouting her down.
Nigam, who has been active in the Adityanath government's controversial anti-Romeo squad, is nicknamed by a section of the media as 'Lady Singham', after a popular Bollywood movie, for her fiery temperament. "The MLA misbehaved with me and refused to acknowledge in full public view that he is speaking to a lady police officer," she said .
