Calcutta High Court yesterday dismissed an appeal by Trinamool Congress seeking the transfer of Dhanram Singh, Superintendent of Police, National Investigation Agency (NIA), from West Bengal. Mr. Singh had led the NIA team that arrested two Trinamool leaders last month in connection with a blast at Bhupatinagar in East Midnapore district in December 2022 that killed three persons.

Earlier, the TMC had first approached the Election Commission of India seeking a replacement for Mr. Singh as the SP of

NIA in West Bengal. TMC had accused the NIA SP of holding a closed-door meeting with BJP leader Jitendra Tiwari just a day before the arrests. The allegation was promptly denied by Mr. Tiwari. After the poll panel refused to entertain the plea, the Trinamool Congress approached the Calcutta High Court. However, the court observed that it could not intervene in the matter as the transfer of a central agency official is an internal matter of the agency.
