Polling in four Lok Sabha constituencies and 28 assembly segments in Odisha passed off peacefully yesterday with the Election Commission giving a primary report of 63.85 percent voting. The voting took place in Berhampur, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi Lok Sabha constituencies, along with all the assembly segments falling under their purview. Nabarangpur reported the highest polling percentage with 68.74, while Berhampur reported the lowest with 58 percent. With this the fate 37 candidates contesting for the Lok Sabha seats and 243 nominees vied for the assembly seats, representing major parties like BJD, Congress and BJP, alongside smaller regional parties and independent candidates have sealed in the EVMs.
Polling commenced at 7 this morning across 7,303 polling stations in the four Lok Sabha seats and their assembly
segments and concluded by 6 this evening. In some remote areas where Maoist activities posed a challenge, polling ended by 4 this afternoon. There were reports of some untoward incidents in a few booths of Berhampur parliamentary constituency and Chikiti assembly constituency during the polling. The Election Commission suspended three polling officials and directed the police to arrest two of them for serious dereliction of polling duty.
Several prominent leaders, including sitting MP Saptagiri Ulaka of Congress, former Union Minister Bhakta Charan Das, state Congress president Sarat Patnaik, former MPs Pradeep Majhi of BJD and Balabhdra Majhi of BJP, state ministers, former ministers and sitting MLAs figure in today’s polling whose fate will be decided on 4th of June.
