Mumbai: A 28-year-old man was killed while five others were injured when the wall of a four-storey building crashed on an adjacent two-storey structure at Bandra’s Kherwadi locality in north-west Mumbai in the small hours of Monday.
The mishap took place at around 2 am when the wall of five-storied building “Razzak Chawl” collapsed on an adjoining two-storey tenement, trapping several persons under the debris. The fire brigade personnel identified the deceased as one Riyaz Ahmad, who died on the way to nearby VN Desai Hospital.
Of those trapped, five persons were injured, while six others were rescued by the fire brigade personnel who rushed to the scene
shortly after the mishap.
While four persons -- Salman Khan (24), Rahul Khot (22), Rohan Khot (22) and Lata Khot (48) -- are undergoing treatment at the Bhabha Hospital where their condition was described as “stable”. One more person – identified as Nooral Haq Haider Ali Sayyad (21) – is undergoing treatment at V N Desai Hospital.
The building collapses are a common feature during the monsoon months in Mumbai and neighbouring satellite towns in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Monday's was the first building collapse before the advent of the monsoon in the country’s commercial capital.
