Ten labourers reportedly died of suffocation in an overnight fire in Ramban district, about 120-km from Jammu, police said on Friday.
The fire broke out in Chanderkote camp where construction workers were staying . According to reports they were engaged by a company constructing Chenani-Nashari tunnel on Jammu-Srinagar highway.
“They were sleeping in a pre-fabricated hut, which apparently caught fire due to short-circuit. 10 people were charred to death while four have been
hospitalised, “ said deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Ramba Nisar Ahmad.
Reports said, last night they were burning woods in their shed at Dalwas area. They reportedly died due to asphyxiation and burn injuries, senior superintendent of police Randip Kumar told IANS. Others were shifted to local hospital.
“The dead includes earth mover operators, helpers and labourers from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and different places of Jammu and Kashmir,” Kumar said.
