As parts of eastern and western India grapple with consequences of floods, which have claimed at least 150 lives in the region, two persons died in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
Heavy rain triggered flash floods in Nagali nallah in Basholi belt of Kathua district, where four persons were washed away while crossing a river on Sunday evening. While three of them were rescued, a 65-year-old woman was washed away and her body was later recovered two km away from the spot.
In another incident, a woman was killed in a landslide in the Purmandal belt of Samba district. It was a sultry day in the national capital with the mercury settling at 36.7 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal for this time of the year. The minimum was recorded at 28.6 degrees Celsius, also two notches above normal.
In Uttarakhand, where most of the places have been receiving rainfall for the past several days with only a brief
let-up, a heavy rain alert has been issued in seven districts over the next 48 hours.
Almora, Champawat, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Pauri, Haridwar and Dehradun are likely to be hit by heavy to very heavy rainfall during the period.
According to latest reports from the state emergency operation centre, the Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway is blocked by debris near Helgugad, Laldhang and Gangnani.
The flood situation in Bihar remained grim as heavy rain continued to lash Terai regions of neighbouring Nepal causing damage to crops and dwellings in 14 districts. While no fresh flood-related death was reported on Monday and the toll stands at 95, a population of 33 lakh has been hit in 78 blocks and 640 panchayats.
In Assam, the flood situation has improved considerably, but three districts are still affected. As many as 29,609 people are hit and 1,248 are staying in six relief camps.
