The annual fishing ban will come into force for a 61-day period from April 15 in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam regions and from June 1 in Mahe. The seasonal ban is aimed at allowing fish to breed and replenish, ensuring long-term sustainability of the marine ecosystem.
The UT Ministry of Fisheries, in a press release, informed that the ban will be enforced from April 15 to June 14 along the Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam coasts and from June 1 to July 31 in the Mahe region. During this time, all mechanized fishing boats, including trawlers and motorized fiber
boats, are strictly prohibited from operating. Only traditional boats like kattumarams and country boats will be allowed.
This ban applies to the coastal stretch from Kanagachhettikulam to Murthikuppam-Pudukuppam in Puducherry and from Mandapathur to North Vanjoor in Karaikal, as well as other designated fishing zones, including the Yanam fishing region. In addition, the use of purse seine nets, also known as surukku valai, will be banned during this period, in accordance with a Supreme Court verdict of 2013.
