The Prime Minister’s residence in the heart of Lutyen’s Delhi has got a new postal address with the existing Race Course Road being renamed Lok Kalyan Marg.
The official residence of the PM will now bear the address 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, after the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the civic agency under whose jurisdiction the road falls , unanimously approved its renaming on Wednesday.
“Taking into consideration the value system, public life, cultural and social values, the Council has approved the proposal unanimously, so as to instil the philosophy of public welfare in the minds of the public at large,” said an NDMC statement. An NDMC official said the new name of the road would appear on signages within the next few days.
The Council meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, also approved the renaming of the Gurudwara
Rakabganj roundabout adjacent to Parliament complex as Guru Gobind Singh Chowk. The Lok Kalyan Marg originates from roundabout where Teen Murti Marg, Rajaji Marg, Akbar Road and Safdarjung Road meet, and ends at Mustafa Kamal Ataturk Marg.
A proposal for renaming the Race Course Road was moved in the NDMC by BJP’s Member of Parliament Meenakshi Lekhi. The NDMC said: “It was observed by the Council that the name ‘Race Course Road’, on which the official residence of Prime Minister is situated, does not match the Indian ethos and value system.”
However, Water Minister Kapil Mishra questioned the haste in renaming the road. He claimed that “Saheb” (Modi) was in a hurry to rename the road. “He was not willing to wait. Now the name has been changed to Lok Kalyan Marg. Hopefully, this name will not be changed,” said Mishra in a tweet in Hindi.
