New Delhi: Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of the Aam Aadmi Party defeated Kaml Bagri of the BJP by a margin of 31 votes to become the deputy mayor of Delhi.

Bagri received 116 votes, but Iqbal received 147. The Civic Centre was where the voting took place.

Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party defeated Rekha Gupta of the BJP to win the mayoral election earlier in the

day.

This was the fourth attempt by the new municipal council to elect a mayor and deputy mayor. Due to controversy over the distribution of voting rights to members who had been nominated, the three previous elections were postponed.

The case was taken to the Supreme Court, which ruled that members of the MCD who had been appointed by the Lieutenant Governor cannot vote to choose the mayor.
