Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti will take over as head of the Election Commission in New Delhi today. He will succeed Nasim Zaidi who demits office yesterday. 

According to the Law Ministry notification, Mr Joti will continue as CEC till 17th of January next year. 64-year-old Mr Joti had joined the three-member poll panel as an election commissioner on 8th of May, 2015.

A 1975-batch IAS officer, Mr Joti is known to be one



of the youngest IAS officers who got into the service at the age of 22. He completed his education from Delhi university. Mr Joti served as chief secretary of Gujarat when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the state. 

He retired as Gujarat chief secretary in January 2013. Mr Joti also served as Chairman of the Kandla Port Trust, Managing Director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd and the Gujarat vigilance commissioner.
