Aligarh: Days after Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) sent a show-cause notice to its students for reportedly organising a Tiranga-rally within its campus, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Satish Gautam has demanded that the word 'Muslim' be dropped from the name Aligarh Muslim University. According to sources, Gautam, the Aligarh MP, said that the word Muslim sounds 'harsh', whereas word Hindu has a 'feeling' attached to it.
"It should be Aligarh University. Word 'Muslim' is a little different. Nothing different. In the sphere of education, the word Muslim sounds (inaudible). I am not against such name. But I feel it is Aligarh University. It should be named just Aligarh University," Gautam said.
On being questioned that if, on similar lines,
the word Hindu should be dropped from Banaras Hindu University, Gautam said, "Say Muslim and then say Hindu. Muslim word sounds a little harsh. Hindu is a soft word. There is a feeling in the world Hindu. There is nothing wrong in keeping Hindu. In Hindustan, there shouldn't be a problem with that. If the word Hindu is not there in Hindustan, then what else can be there? he questioned."
Gautam had also attacked the AMU authorities when they sent a show-cause notice to students who took out a Tiranga rally within the campus. In a letter to Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javdekar urging him to seek an explanation from AMU administration for taking action against students who took out the rally. 'Is organising patriotic event unconstitutional?' he had questioned.
