Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that if the voters bless Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a third successive term at the Centre, their government would ensure that Naxalism is rooted out of the country within one to two years.
Speaking exclusively interview, Amit Shah spoke about the recent operation by security forces in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district in which 29 Naxals were killed.
In an operation on Tuesday, teams of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the District Reserve Guard (DRG) conducted a joint operation in Kanker, killing 29 Naxals, including one of their top leaders. These were the highest casualties suffered by the Naxals in a single encounter in the history of Chhattisgarh's fight against Left Wing Extremism (LWE).
The Home Minister said as soon as the BJP formed a government in Chhattisgarh, the crackdown on Naxalism intensified.
"Naxalism is now limited only to four districts in Chhattisgarh. For five years, the Congress government in the state did not properly cooperate with us. When the government changed, the priority changed and within 90 days, we have killed
86 Naxals, arrested 126 and over 250 have surrendered," Amit Shah said.
"I can say with confidence on your channel that if the people elect PM Modi for the third term, we will, within one or two years, eradicate Naxalism from this country," he added.
The Home Minister also criticised the Congress for seeking a probe into the security operation in Kanker.
"They smell fishy in everything. Tulsidas ji has said in Ramcharitmanas that when God decides to punish someone, it takes away the sanity of a person. I believe that they (Congress) have lost their sanity," he said.
On Wednesday, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate questioned the encounter, saying the incident should be investigated.
Amit Shah highlighted that under the Congress rule, Naxalism had a presence in one-third of the country.
"Under 10 years of Modi government, we have set up 250 security camps in Naxal areas. Today, I can say with confidence that states like Jharkhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are completely rid of Naxalism," he said.
