The government has said that around 11 crore 75 lakh tap water connections have been provided to rural households under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)- Har Ghar Jal in the last five years. This was stated by Minister Of State For Jal Shakti, V. Somanna in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha yesterday.
He said only 3 crore 23 lakh rural households had tap water connections when the Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in August 2019 but now over 77 per cent of rural households in the country have water connections. He further said the 55 litres per capita per day of prescribed quality is being provided through these
connections.
On the quality of the water provided through the scheme, the minister said, an online JJM – Water Quality Management Information System (WQMIS) portal has been developed to enable States and Union Territories to test water samples for water quality and for sample collection, reporting, monitoring and surveillance of drinking water sources.
He said the states and UTs have also been advised to identify and train five persons preferably women from every village to conduct water quality tests at the village level and report the same on the WQMIS portal.
