In a significant pre-election move, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday (December 10) announced a slew of welfare measures for Delhi’s auto drivers, including a Rs 10 lakh insurance policy. The announcement was made during Kejriwal’s visit to the residence of auto driver Navneet in Kondli constituency, where he shared a meal with the driver’s family.

Speaking at the event, Kejriwal said, “During the Congress rule, auto drivers were often maligned. After the AAP government came into power, we worked to make their lives easier. Today, I have eaten the salt of auto drivers, and I am committed to their welfare.”

Kejriwal unveiled five guarantees for the auto drivers if his government is re-elected:

Insurance coverage: Rs 10 lakh insurance for all auto drivers.

Marriage assistance: Rs 1 lakh

financial support for the marriage of auto drivers’ daughters.

Uniform allowance: Rs 2,500 twice a year for uniforms, directly credited to their accounts.

Coaching for children: Government-sponsored coaching for the children of auto drivers.

Relaunching of PoochhO app: The app allows people to access the database developed by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Model Transit System of registered auto drivers' mobile numbers and call them up to book a ride.

This announcement is seen as a part of AAP’s strategy to consolidate support among the city’s auto drivers, who have historically been a strong voter base for the party.

The elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly are due in February next year. The AAP pitted against the BJP and the Congress, is working hard to retain power for a third time in a row.
