In Mizoram, at least 41 concrete structures comprising community halls, church, tourist lodge, historical site at Samthang and police stations were partially damaged by the earthquake that occurred in Champhai yesterday. About 55 residential houses were damaged. The loss of these properties happened in two RD blocks - Champhai and Khawbung. A report from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office of the district has confirmed this. The report said, there is no incidence of loss of life due to the earthquake.
Deputy Commissioner Maria Zuali said, the District Administration has set up call centres in the DC office to contact all village councils to assess the amount of wreckage. For some villages having no internet and mobile reception, the Administration has also deployed
staff to gather further details.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah talked to Chief Minister Zoramthanga and offered all help from the Central Government in the wake of the earthquake. The Chief Minister has thanked the Prime Minister and the Home Minister for their assurance of support. He said, damage assessment has been undertaken by concerned MLA and district administration.
The morning earthquake caused cracks on roads and building walls at some places in the district. It also caused a landslide blocking the road between Vaphai and Chawngtui East villages. Many villages under Tuipuiral in East Tuipui constituency and Zokawthar received maximum damage.
