Bharatiya Janata Party Leader Syed Zafar Islam has been elected unopposed for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh yesterday.
The election was necessitated following the demise of Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated Syed Zafar Islam for his unopposed election.
Earlier party's UP unit general secretary Govind Narayan Shukla withdrew his candidature for by-elections on Thursday, clearing the
way for the original nominee Syed Zafar Islam to be elected to contest unopposed. Zafar couldn't come for the nomination as he was found covid positive.
Yesterday was the last date for the withdrawal of nominations and only Zafar was left in the fray so the election process could not be stretched till September 11, the date for polling. Zafar Islam would serve the remainder of Amar Singh’s term till July 4, 2022.
