BJP leaders to meet Maharashtra Governor today

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders will meet Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari today. With the term of the current Maharashtra assembly set to an end on Saturday, indications are that the BJP is likely to stake a claim for government formation.

Senior BJP leader and Environment Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar and State BJP President Chandrakant Patil will meet the Governor. Speaking to reporters after a meeting of BJP’s core committee leaders in Mumbai,  Sudhir Mungantiwar said, his party is making all efforts to ensure that the BJP-Shiv Sena government is formed in the state at the earliest.

Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray has also called a meeting of all his elected MLAs today to discuss the political impasse.

(NCP) chief Sharad Pawar yesterday ruled out the possibility of a Sena-NCP-Congress combine to form the government. Pawar said BJP, Sena should form the government as they have the mandate and his party will play the role of a responsible Opposition.

Since the results of the Assembly elections on 24th October, the two allies  BJP and Shiv Sena have been locked in a tussle over a power-sharing pact. The standoff has been over sharing the chief minister’s post, with Sena demanding an equal division of the top post’s tenure. 

In the 288-member Assembly, the BJP-Sena’s tally of 161 is way ahead of the simple majority mark of 145. BJP is the single-largest party with 105 seats while Sena has 56 seats.
