The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will appoint its new national president only after the Delhi assembly elections, according to sources. The election for the party's president is likely to take place between February 10 and February 20.
JP Nadda, the current president, will continue to lead the BJP during the Delhi polls. His tenure as president officially ended in January 2024. However, Nadda’s term was extended in light of the Lok Sabha elections.
The process for organisational elections within the BJP has started. Members of the National Council and State Councils, who are responsible for electing the party president, are currently being chosen. At least 50% of the state units must complete
their organisational elections before the national president can be elected.
So far, only four states have completed the process of electing their state presidents. According to BJP leaders, the organisational elections are proceeding as per schedule and will be completed on time.
Delays in states like Maharashtra and Haryana occurred due to assembly elections, which caused a late start to the membership drive.
Delhi will go to polls in a single phase on February 5, with a fierce triangular contest between the AAP, BJP and the Congress setting the political temperatures soaring in the cold wave-gripped national capital. The results will be announced on February 8.
