In Punjab, the candidates of various parties filed their nomination papers to contest the by-poll in Sangrur Constituency on the last day of filing nomination papers yesterday. Bhartiya Janta Party candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon filed his nomination papers in the presence of Punjab BJP President Ashwani Sharma, senior leader Sunil Jakhar and others.

The 72-year-old former MLA from Barnala Mr Dhillon was announced BJP candidate for the by-poll yesterday. He joined the BJP on Saturday. He had won the 2007 and 2012 elections from the seat on a Congress ticket.

Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy has also filed his nomination papers. The Former MLA from Sangrur had lost to chief minister Bhagwant Mann in the recent elections.

46-year-old Kamaldeep Kaur who was announced Shiromani Akali Dal Badal candidate has also filed her nomination papers in the presence of Party President Sukhbir Singh Badal yesterday.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has fielded  Punjab Chief Minister’s close aid Gurmel Singh as the candidate for the Sangrur by-polls. Who had already filed his nomination papers? The Lok Sabha seat is considered to be an AAP stronghold since 2014 when Mann had entered the lower house by winning the seat.

The by-poll is taking place due to the resignation of its MP Bhagwant Mann, who is now the Punjab chief minister. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be done today.

Sangrur will go to the polls on June 23. The counting of votes will take place on June 26.
