Whether or not all Maktabs and Madrasas in the country must be converted into “regular schools and junior colleges” will be decided at the upcoming meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) next week.
The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has listed the issue in the agenda of the meeting on a proposal of CABE member Latif Magdum, who happens to be the secretary of the Maharashtra Cosmopolitan Education Society (MCES).
“The medium of these traditional institutions should be English, so that they will be at a par with the National Education Policy (NEP),” Magdum said. The current education policy of the Centre has “failed” in ensuring “quality education”

at “traditional institutions like Madrasas and Maktabs,” he said.
Headquartered in Pune, the MCES is one of the oldest educational organisations in Pune  and is known for its work in the field of education with large number of professional and technical institutions functioning under it.
“Vocational training should be provided to children studying in Madrasas to enhance their opportunities for entering into the job market and encourage entrepreneurship,” the CABE member said.
The CABE member also advised for setting up of an umbrella body, Directorate of Minority Welfare, for proper implementation and monitoring of the minority schemes and programmes.
