The Bombay High Court yesterday took suo moto cognizance of the building collapse in Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra’s Thane district and described it as a very serious incident.
A bench led by Chief Justice Dipankar Datta made the state of Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and civic bodies of Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Kalyan-Dombivali,Thane and Navi Mumbai as respondents in the case.
Chief Justice Datta directed Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni to ensure the state and the civic bodies filed their replies to the notices in two
weeks.
Three days after the building collapse in Mumbai's Bhiwandi area, the National Disaster Response Force called off the rescue operation.
The NDRF team recovered a total of 41 bodies from the debris and rescued nearly 25 people in this operation.
Out of the 41 dead bodies pulled out, 18 were children including 3 toddlers.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the owner of the building and two civic officials have been suspended in relation to this building collapse.
