Assistant Inspector Margaret Theresa was on night duty for a temple function near an area called Suthamalli when a man named Arumugam approached her and got into an argument with her. He then attacked her with a knife. The officer sustained injuries to her face, neck and chest.
She was immediately rushed to the Tirunelveli government college hospital.
The accused, Arumugam, was nabbed and it was found that Margaret had booked him for drunk driving last month. Angered by this, he attacked
her.
The police officer is out of danger at the moment and is responding well to treatment.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin spoke to the officer over the phone and assured her that high-quality medical treatment would be provided.
He had even taken to social media and had said, "I contacted Margaret Theresa, the Assistant Inspector of Police who was attacked in Tirunelveli, and inquired about her health. The attacker has been arrested. I have advised that Margaret Theresa be provided high-quality medical treatment."
