Both the houses of the Maharashtra State Legislature were adjourned today on the second day of Budget session due to noisy scenes by the legislators of the Opposition. The Opposition grilled the govt. on the OBC seat reservation seats in local bodies, besides demanding resignation of Cabinet Minister Nawab Malik following his arrest by ED in a money laundering case linked with Gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
Raising the issue of yesterday's Supreme Court order, rejecting the interim report presented by Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission, recommending restoration of 27 percent of reservation for OBC, Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis expressed serious doubts on government's efficiency on handling the matter.
Mr Fadnavis said the report submitted by the state government was amateurish with incomplete and unauthenticated information which is delaying the resolution to the case. Replying to the BJP leader’s allegation, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said instead of
mudslinging, all the members of the House should come together and work out a solution.
He said the right to OBC reservation was not denied by the court. He explained, the court could not scrutinize the data provided by the state government. Mr Bhujbal said the state government fulfilled all the requirements within 15 days as directed by the court; however, in some cases, the court has pointed toward some errors.
Leader of Opposition in the State Council Pravin Darekar demanded discussion on the OBC quota keeping aside all other matters. Member of Legislative Council Chandrashekhar Bawankule said they won’t let the house function till the demands are met.
He also demanded elections should not be held in the state till the OBCs get justice. Raising the issue of ST workers, MLC Gopinath Padalkar said the MVA government should take a decision on the sensitive issue.
Amidst uproarious scenes, both the Houses were adjourned.
