A total of 1664 candidates have filed their nomination papers for 93 constituencies spread over North and Central Gujarat.Today is the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers for the second phase of Assembly elections in Gujarat.
However, the picture of the final contest will emerge after the withdrawal of nomination papers.
Meanwhile, a total of 977 candidates are in the fray for 89 seats of Kutch, Saurashtra and South Gujarat for the first phase of polling to be held on 9th December. Out of this, 273 candidates are from national political parties. This was announced by Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat Mr B.B.Swain last evening.
Addressing the press conference at Gandhinagar, Mr Swain
said that, BJP is contesting all 89 seats of the first phase of polling. Congress is contesting on 87 seats, while NCP is contesting on 30 seats. BSP is contesting on 68 seats. CPI-M is contesting on 2 seats, while CPI is contesting on one seat.
Mr Swain said that in other political parties registered in other states, Aam Adami Party is contesting on 21 seats, Janata Dal-United contesting on 14 seats, Samajwadi Party on 4 seats while Shiv Sena is contenting on 25 seats. 198 candidates are contesting from unregistered parties while 442 independents are also in the fray for 89 seats of first phase polling in 19 districts.
Campaigning is in full swing in the areas going for the poll in the first phase.
