Under pressure from opposition, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Muzaffarpur shelter home case. CM Kumar ordered the chief secretary, principal home secretary and the DGP to hand over the probe to the CBI.

Girls of the government-funded shelter home Bihar's Muzaffarpur alleged that one of their fellow inmates was beaten to death and buried at the premises of the facility, and several were raped.

On Monday, authorities made efforts to exhume the bodies of girls who were allegedly killed after being raped and buried there

Last week, a medical examination of 44 inmates revealed that 21 were



raped.

The police, on Monday, raided the premises and rescued 44 girls. Eleven employees of the shelter home have been arrested in this regard.

Allegations of sexual exploitation at the Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti, a shelter home run by Brajesh Thakur and Vineet Kumar, first surfaced in May this year following a social audit carried out by the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). TISS submitted a 100-page report to the Bihar government following which authorities sealed the home and rescued the 21 girls.

Terming the incident unfortunate, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, Tejashwi Yadav, accused the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led state government of shielding the culprits.
