On the coastlines of Chennai and Ennore in Tamil Nadu,
that are affected by the huge oil spill, massive clean up operations are
underway for the sixth day today. The coordinating agency for removal of the
oil sludge, the Indian Coast Guard says, there is no traces of oil spill
inwards the sea now, though a few stretches of the coasts near Ennore Kamarajar
Port remain blackened with the oil pollutants. The spill was due to a collision
of two vessels near the Port at Ennore, 30 kilometers off Chennai on Saturday.
An estimate by the Coast Guard has said more than 60 tonnes of oil sludge and
even higher quantity of oil and water mix and polluted sand have been removed
so far.
Full-fledged clean up operations began more than a day after the collision, as
officials initially believed the damage is minimal. Coast Guard along with
personnel from the state government and the port are joined by hundreds of
volunteering youth and college students in removing the oil slick manually and
using dispersing agents. The major operation is expected to be over shortly.
However, it is feared that it would take a longer time to get rid of the oil
coating from the affected beaches.
