Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai-led Chhattisgarh government has announced that shops, parlours, cafes, and restaurants across the state will now be allowed to operate 24 hours a day, a move aimed at simulating business growth, generating employment, and enhancing urban infrastructure.
However, all the liquor shops will continue to close at 10 pm, maintaining the existing restrictions. Additionally, women have also been allowed to work during the night.
Announcing the decision, Cabinet Minister Lakhan Lal Dewangan said, "Shops in Chhattisgarh can now operate round the clock, fostering a business-friendly environment. Women employees will also be permitted to work at midnight. The reform is expected to boost employment opportunities and accelerate economic growth,
aligning with our vision of transforming Chhattisgarh’s cities into metro-style urban centres".
Previously, the law permitting 24-hour business operations was limited to urban municipal areas. Under the new provisions, small business owners, particularly those employing ten or more workers, will benefit. The reforms also introduced increased penalties for violations but offer businesses the option to compound offences, preventing lengthy court proceedings.
As per a notification issued on February 13, the responsibility for shop and establishment registration has shifted from municipal bodies to the Labour Department. The registration fee will now range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on the number of employees--an increase from the previous Rs 100 to Rs 250 range.
