The Congress on Thursday named Sheila Dikshit as its chief ministerial face for the 2017 Assembly elections in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh. The Congress is planning to project Sheila (78) as an experienced, tough and no-nonsense leader, whose 15-year stint changed the face of the national capital.
It also named Thakur leader Sanjay Singh, the titular Raja of Amethi, as chairman of the party’s campaign committee for Uttar Pradesh and Pramod Tiwari, a Brahmin, as the head of the coordination
committee.
“What you speculated for long is true. Sheila Dikshit is the chief ministerial face for Uttar Pradesh,” AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters here. With this, the Congress has now put in place its team for the elections in Uttar Pradesh. Two days ago, it named Raj Babbar as president of the UP unit.
However, the Congress remained silent on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s role in the polls. The announcements are in line with suggestions made by poll strategist Prashant Kishor.
