In Maharashtra, Congress made a clean sweep in the Nanded-Waghala municipal corporation elections with winning 70 of the 81 seats.BJP has won five, while Shiv Sena is placed a distant third, winning three seats.Independent candidate also won three seats.
The result shows a root out of the AIMIM, which had around a dozen corporators in the outgoing body.Five years ago AIMIM was entered in Maharashtra through same Nanded Waghala Municipal corporation election.
The Congress has 41 members in the outgoing civic body, followed by 14 corporators of the Shiv Sena, 11 of the AIMIM and Nationalist Congress Party's 10.
The municipal
corporation of Nanded has been ruled by the Congress except a term of Shivsena, since it came into existence two decades ago.
Nanded is the home turf of Maharashtra Congress president and former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who is a Member of Parliament from this constituency.
It saw an aggressive campaign, with BJP making all efforts to wrest control of the civic body. The campaign for the polls witnessed a bitter war of words among the Congress, BJP and Shiv Sena.
For the Congress, winning Nanded was a matter of prestige so much so that Ashok Chavan parked himself in the constituency to ensure a win for the party.
