Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has resigned following his party's defeat in the assembly elections. The ruling NR Congress could win only eight seats in the 30 member Assembly. Congress is all set to form government in the Union Territory.
The party has won 15 seats while its alliance partner DMK bagged two. Now the alliance has a clear majority in the house. Hectic activity is reported in Congress headquarters as leaders are holding parleys on the formation of the new Government. Party is yet to announce its candidate for Chief Ministership.
The ruling NR Congress suffered a severe
blow as all the four ministers in the previous Government lost the elections. Chief Minister N Rangasamy alone came victorious. Speaker of the outgoing Assembly too lost in his home constituency. While in Yanam Congress strong man Malladi Krishna Rao retained his seat, former Minister and Congress candidate Valsaraj conceded defeat in the lone constituency in Mahe.
He had been representing Mahe in the Puducherry Assembly for over 25 years. AIADMK which contested alone in the Polls won 4 seats while BJP and the six party People Welfare Alliance could not make any inroads in the Union Territory.
