The Congress is gearing up for a crucial leadership and organisational strategy revamp as it is set to hold the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Tuesday, followed by a full-fledged party convention the day after in Ahmedabad. Sources confirmed that the party leadership is actively considering a more defined and potentially elevated role for Priyanka Gandhi ahead of a crucial electoral cycle.
At the core of the Ahmedabad deliberations will be decentralisation of organisational power, alliance management, and enhanced public outreach – all expected to be key components of the resolutions debated and adopted.
“Right now, one of our key focusses is how Priyanka Gandhi can take on a more direct and structured responsibility, especially with six major state elections on the horizon,” said a senior party leader.
Some insiders hinted at the possibility of her being entrusted with charge of a key state or a major electoral responsibility.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra currently holds the post of General Secretary but has not been assigned a specific portfolio, leading to calls from various state units and senior leaders to better utilise her political skills and connect with the electorate.
Though she has played prominent roles in past election campaigns, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, her exact responsibilities in the party have remained ambiguous in recent
months.
The two-day session in Ahmedabad is being seen as a “reset moment” for the party and is being framed as a roadmap to reclaim political ground in Gujarat by 2027. It gains symbolic and political weight as it takes place in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, a region where the Congress has long struggled to regain a foothold.
Rahul Gandhi, in a speech in Parliament last year, declared that the INDIA bloc would defeat the BJP in Gujarat, a statement that has now become a rallying cry for the party’s renewed push in the state.
During his recent visit to Gujarat, Rahul also stressed on urgent structural changes in the party in the state, even if it costs the ouster of a significant number of current leaders.
At the CWC meeting on Tuesday, the party is expected to pass several key resolutions related to political, economic, and social matters. The political resolution is likely to call for decentralising organisational power by strengthening district-level Congress committees.
The social resolution is expected to reaffirm the party’s opposition to the controversial Waqf Bill and assert that it will challenge the legislation through legal means, according to sources.
On April 9, the party will hold an in-depth brainstorming session focused on election preparedness, alliance management within the INDIA bloc, and recalibrating its strategy to take on Prime Minister Modi.
