The Tamil Nadu government has decided to extend the lockdown by one more week till June 7.
In a statement, the government said that a food kit with 13 items will be distributed to all ration cardholders from June.
Shops selling vegetables, fruits and groceries would remain shut during the period.
The government will also take steps to ensure delivery of groceries at the
doorstep of people.
The government said although there has been a slight reduction in the number of cases recorded in Chennai, major districts like Coimbatore Tirupur, Erode, Salem etc are seeing a rise in cases.
On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin attended a meeting with district collectors and on Thursday he met medical-expert committee. All of whom had recommended that the lockdown be extended.
