The 'Cyclone Nada'
has crossed the coast south of Karaikkal in Puducherry after weakening into a
depression this morning. Met Department said, the weather system is expected to
further weaken after the landfall and is set to trigger light to moderate rain
in interior districts.
Squally winds reaching 45 to 55 kilometer speed gushing to 65 kilometer occasionally is predicted on the sea. The weather system, which took the form of a depression in South East Bay on 29th of last month, gradually gained strength and became a cyclone on Wednesday.
However, it
eventually began to weaken even before its landfall and has crossed the
coast,
bringing sporadic light to moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The first ever cyclonic storm this North East Monsoon season has belied expectations of a good rainfall. Mahabalipuram has recorded 7 centimetre rain and Chennai 4 cm. Under the impact of the weakened weather system, the sea remains rough and fishermen stay away from the sea. In stark contrast to the situation this time last year, most of the water bodies in the state are near dry condition.
As the monsoon season normally lasts till the end of this month, farmers and water managers pin their hopes on possible fresh weather systems in the days to come.
