Jal Shakti Minister Dr Gajendra Singh Shekhawat today introduced the Dam Safety Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha. Dr Shekhawat said 92 per cent of the dams in the country are built on inter-state rivers.

Before introducing the Bill, the Minister sought permission of the House. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and RSP member N

K Premchandran opposed the legislation, saying water is a state subject. Shashi Tharoor of Congress said the Bill should be sent to a Parliamentary Standing Committee. BJD’s Bhartruhari Mahtab also questioned the legislative competence of the Bill, alleging that the Centre is trying to appropriate the powers of the States.
