The depression lying over the South West Bay has intensified into Deep Depression and has moved to the Comorin area and its neighbourhood early this morning. The Meteorology Department has said, the weather system lies some 210 kilometres South and South East of Kanyakumari at present.
The system is set to drift West-North Westwards at a speed of about 20 kilometres per hour and intensify further into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours. Weather officials have predicted rainfall at most places in Southern Tamil Nadu with heavy to very heavy rain in some places for the next 36 hours.
Two troughs of low pressure
were formed in the South West Bay recently followed by the present Deep Depression, leading to moderate to heavy rain in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts. The three district administrations and adjoining Virudhunagar have declared leave for schools and colleges for the day.
The Delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukottai have announced leave for schools alone. The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tirunelveli has deferred its examinations and the famous Courtallam Waterfalls has been made out of binding for tourists. The present spell of rain has brought cheers on the face of the farmers.
