The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal adjoining northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra coast has triggered heavy rain in various parts of Chennai and its neighbourhood. Rain lavishes most parts of the city since last night without any let off. The adjacent districts are getting moderate rain. Chennai Meenambakkam has received 11 centimeter rain since last night and Nungambakkam 8 centimeter so far. The Meteorology Department in Chennai has said the weather phenomenon is now laying centres about 90 kilometer off the coast of the city and is moving towards Southern Andhra coast. It may intensify into a
deep depression on its way and even into a cyclone, as predicted by the weather officials. However, rainfall is set to decrease gradually today as the system moves northwards, though southern Andhra may witness more rain, they have said.
The district administrations of Chennai and its adjacent areas have alerted the fire service personnel, police and revenue officials and also brought about 300 National Disaster Rescue Force, though no widespread damage has been reported from anywhere so far. A few places in the Delta and southern coastal districts are set to get modest rain.
