Delhi Assembly clears proposal to hike MLAs salary

Delhi Assembly has passed a bill to effect around 400 per cent hike in the salaries of MLAs. The Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Government of NCT of Delhi (Salaries, Allowances, Pension) Amendment Bill 2015 will allow the basic salaries of MLAs to go up from 12,000 rupees to 50,000 rupees.

The bill also proposes to hike in constituency allowance from current 18,000 to 50,000 rupees. The bill also provides for a reimbursable sum of 70,000 rupees per month as allowance under 'Secretarial, Research and Office Assistance' which is 30,000 rupees at present.

0.0001pt;">As per provision of the bill cleared by the Assembly, the legislators will be entitled to a communication allowance of 10,000 rupees per month as well as 30,000 rupees as monthly conveyance allowance for each MLA. With this, their overall monthly package will be over 2 lakh rupees as against the existing 88,000 rupees. The Delhi government will now send the bill to the Centre for its approval.

In July this year a group of AAP legislators had demanded a significant hike in salary, arguing their earnings were not enough to run their family and offices.
