Delhi government extends midday meal scheme for girls up to class 12th. The city government will earmark separate funds in its budget proposals for extending the scheme, which as of now
covers boy and girl students till class 8 only. The government claimed that Delhi will become the first state in the country to serve midday meal up to class 12.
Schools will start serving midday meal to girl students of class 9 to 12 from 1st of next month. This will be done with a view to fight malnourishment and anaemia, especially in female students. Currently, the scheme covers all primary classes of MCD and government
schools and upper primary classes till Class VIII of the latter.
The Delhi government will allocate a separate budget for this and the decisions are likely to be announced in the upcoming Budget session. Approximately, an additional amount of 50 crore rupees will be spent in this scheme in comparison to last year.
The Centre gives around 95 crore rupees assistance to Delhi government annually for serving midday meal from Class 1 to 8. In Delhi, there are around one thousand government-run schools with 16 lakh students in them. Out of this there are around 450 girl schools.
