Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has nominated Delhi Home Minister Kailash Gahlot to unfurl the national flag at the state-level Independence Day celebrations at Chhatarasal Stadium in the national capital. Mr Gahlot will do so as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who normally leads the celebrations, is in jail following his arrest by the CBI in the alleged liquor policy case.
In a written communication, Delhi LG’s Principal Secretary Ashish Kundra informed Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar that, as per practice, the Delhi Police is responsible for the ceremonial
march-past parade after the unfurling of the national flag. The Home Department of the Delhi Government and Delhi Police play a primary role in the state-level function of Independence Day, apart from making security arrangements for the event.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party welcomed the decision of Delhi’s LG, VK Saxena. In a statement, the AAP said that this move honours the principle of democracy by choosing an elected representative over an appointed one, reinforcing the importance of the people’s mandate in governance.
